Is Thailand Really That Cheap?

Tomy and I have some very different opinions about things like comfort, food combinations (I love apples with salt, he prefers apples with honey), and adventure. That being said, when we travel we try to get the best of both worlds in to every trip. Although Bangkok was not my favorite place on earth, Chiang Mai is opening up my eyes to an all new South East Asian experience, culinary and culturally. 

Whenever people talk about Southeast Asia, the topic of price comes up. You always hear about "lunch for $2," or "ride home for $0.20," but is that actually true? See for yourself. Here are some prices we've encountered during our month in Thailand, rounded to the nearest dime:

Bangkok

  • Accommodation / Marvin Suites, Financial District: 289 Euros for 11 nights / $330
  • Accommodation / Villa Cha Cha, Khaosan Area: 162 Euros for 4 nights / $183
  • Restaurant / Sushi for two in Financial District: 1000 Baht / $30
  • Restaurant / Western Style Brunch for Two, Coffee Included: 800 Baht / $25
  • Restaurant / Vegetarian Dinner for Two: 400 Baht / $12.30
  • Street food / Fruits: 20-30 Baht per bag of chopped fruit / $0.60
  • Street food / Fresh Pomegranate juice: 12-50 Baht, depending on size and location / $0.40-$1.50
  • Street food / Pad Thai: 50-100 Baht, depending on location / $1.50-$3
  • Street food / Meat on a Stick: 25 Baht per stick / $0.77
  • Starbucks / Grande Frapuccino or Iced Latte: 130 Baht / $4
  • Coworking / Glowfish One Day Pass: 200 Baht + 1 free coffee / $6.15
  • Market / Touristy tank tops: 160 Baht for 3 shirts, with bargaining / $5
  • Public Transportation / Skytrain Day Pass: 120 Baht / $3.70
  • Uber Black / Airport to Hotel: 1000 Baht - fixed price to/from airport (500 with Uber X) / $30 
  • Uber X / Sukhumvit to Khaosan Road: 253 Baht / $7.75
    > Keep in mind that in Bangkok the only difference between Uber Black and Uber X is the color of the car. Both options come with a free bottle of water and air conditioning. 
  • Tuk tuk / Financial District to Khaosan Road: 200 Baht / $6.15
    > *Tip: Always, always bargain with the driver for a reasonable price. Agree on the price before leaving.
    > *Tip: When it's not rush hour, choose to take a taxi instead of a tuk tuk. Make sure to ask your driver to use the meter, or else you'll have to negotiate over a price. 

Chiang Mai

  • Accommodation / Leechiang Boutique Hotel, Old Town: 269 Euros for 5 nights / $305
  • Accommodation / Vanilla Residence, Nimman Area: 292 Euros for 8 nights / $330
